There is a phrase we often use here at Adina Watches. Built by hand by people. On the surface, it describes how our watches are made here in Brisbane. But to me, it means something much deeper.
As the second generation leading our family’s business, I have had the privilege of watching skilled Australian watchmakers dedicate their working lives to mastering a craft that cannot be rushed, automated or replicated by algorithms. Every watch that leaves our workshop has passed through the hands of people who genuinely care. They inspect every component, fit every seal, align every hand and test every movement because they understand that what they are building is much more than a device that tells the time.
They are creating something that will become part of someone’s life story.
Human Meaning
We are living through one of the most extraordinary periods of technological advancement in history. Artificial intelligence is transforming the way we work, communicate and solve problems. At Adina, we embrace technology where it genuinely improves our business. Modern manufacturing equipment, sophisticated quality control and digital systems all help us produce better watches and provide better service to our customers.
But there remains one thing that technology cannot manufacture. Human meaning. A watch has never simply measured time. It measures moments.
Emotional Moments
Walk through our workshop, and you’ll see watchmakers concentrating quietly on their benches. Their experience has been built over decades. Many have repaired thousands of watches and assembled countless more. Their knowledge comes from years of practice, mistakes, patience and learning. There is no shortcut to becoming a master watchmaker. It is a deeply human profession that combines technical precision with intuition and pride in one’s work.
Every completed watch carries a little of that person with it. That is something no artificial intelligence can ever replicate. What makes our work especially rewarding is knowing where these watches end up.
Some are presented after ten, twenty or even forty years of loyal service to an employee whose contribution has helped build a business. Others are given to celebrate a graduation, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter. We see watches exchanged between newly engaged couples, presented on wedding mornings, gifted to mark milestone birthdays and anniversaries, and handed from parents to children as family heirlooms.
These moments are emotional.
Something Completely Unique
We’ve watched recipients open a presentation box and become speechless. We’ve seen tears, hugs, laughter and quiet reflection. Often the watch is engraved with a message that only the giver and recipient truly understand. Those few words transform a beautiful Australian-made watch into something completely unique.
No algorithm can create that feeling.
No machine can understand why a father struggles to find the right words for his son’s twenty-first birthday, or why a business owner wants to thank an employee who has devoted decades of their life to helping others succeed.
These are deeply human experiences.
Relationships matter
As a family business now entering its second generation, this resonates strongly with me. My father, Bob Menzies, founded Adina over five decades ago with a simple belief that quality, integrity and craftsmanship would always matter. Today, although our tools have evolved and our business has embraced modern technology, those values remain unchanged.
We still believe people matter. We still believe craftsmanship matters. We still believe relationships matter.
Perhaps that is why watches occupy such a unique place in our lives. Unlike so many products that become obsolete within a few years, a quality watch becomes more valuable emotionally as time passes. Every scratch tells a story. Every service extends its life. Every glance at the dial recalls the occasion on which it was received.
Long after smartphones are upgraded, and digital devices are forgotten, a well-made watch continues quietly accompanying life’s journey.
Artificial intelligence will undoubtedly reshape many industries. It will improve productivity, accelerate innovation and help solve problems that once seemed impossible. We should embrace those opportunities while recognising that technology is ultimately a tool.
It cannot replace human connection. It cannot manufacture pride. It cannot create memories. It cannot love.
